James Altucher is a powerful hedge fund manager who has founded or co-founded a number of companies; Altucher has also published five books on finance with traditional publishing houses. Altucher’s bold announcement in a 2008 blog seems to be proving itself as we witness the wars between Amazon and the largely New York based literary agents.
Particularly for would-be non-fiction authors, self-publishing may be the only method to get your work out there. Not because there’s anything wrong with your book, but because most traditional publishers do not expect to make enough profit in books they believe ‘too niche’, or that have too small a market of potential buyers. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t enough profit in this to the author, particularly when publication costs are low. In any case, profiting from book sales is not the sole motive for authors wanting to view their books published.
If you choose to, then you can just bite the bullet and publish the book using applications that’s made to help people self publish. This can be a time consuming endeavor but in the end perhaps well worthwhile. But should you prefer a physical book like paper back and hard back, you’re very likely to want professional help with the binding of this book. You can really take your manuscript to many of the series office supply stories and have it bound there. This can actually get pricey though. Online publishing houses are probably cheaper.

Ultimately it all comes down to sales. You must do the sums to work out which method is going to be the right for you. But having done this you may find you have little option. You might be completely unable to obtain an established agent or publisher and you may also have difficulty interesting any web designers and internet marketers in becoming involved in your job other than on a fee paying foundation – and that could cost a fortune. Now that you have read through this far, has that stirred your views in any way? There is a great deal in the body of knowledge surrounding you can try this out. The self-publishing industry has changed all of that. It has evolved apparently overnight and we have only just hit the tip of this iceberg. The internet, technology, Amazon’s self-publishing giant createspace along with other self-publishing options like Authorhouse and The Creative Penn create getting your own book in print very doable. From here on in I will suppose that you’ve opted to enter the publishing business. Your first decision is whether to go with a hard copy of your book or if to stay with an e-book – by which I mean a book that’s sold in electronic form. E-books are cheaper and market well – my very first book is called THE WAY TO TRADE and we have sold more in e-book form than in hard copy form. If you want to find the website just enter THE WAY TO TRADE in the Google search engine.
Take such as Joseph Finder, author of the best-selling corporate espionage book, Paranoia. He had had moderate success with his past well-written CIA suspense novels, but didn’t hit it big until he accidentally created a totally new genre using Paranoia. In his words, “All I was doing was trying something new – a thriller with a fresh setting, a fresh cast of characters.”
